To other or to be othered
by Kounsel
AAC invites Kounsel (Joshua Leon & Abbas Zahedi) to open a conversation on ‘To other or to be othered’
Kounsel is a space for open iterative conversations regarding contemporary dilemmas and ideas founded by artists Joshua Leon and Abbas Zahedi. Through Kounsel they offer a space for conversation without judgement in particular within the space of art institutions, allowing participants to be active in their concerns and issues as well as their potential blind spots.
For this particular iteration, the subject of conversation will be the issue of antisemitism and Islamophobia. This conversation comes out of rising tensions that are causing remerging tropes of these two xenophobias, and the potential misinterpretation, misuse, and at times purposefully harmful language and images that are circulating in today's fast, imprecise social spaces. Leon and Zahedi will offer up a historical context for these ideas, one that pre-dates 9/11 and WWII, which are often perceived as singular moments, as well as attempting to hold space to remain complex regarding the situation in Israel, Palestine, and the Middle East, and how this particular space ripples and upheaves both antisemitism and Islamophobia from dormancy.
